What is International Patient Access?

Using the HL7® FHIR® standard, the International Patient Access specification allows patients to securely access health data across borders, similar to how online banking or Open Banking in the UK provides seamless access to financial information. This global interoperability ensures timely, accurate care and empowers patients with control over their data, enhancing healthcare delivery through data-driven, patient-centered approaches.

The Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health of Canada

“The Connected Care for Canadians Act legislation is about enabling Canadians to access their own health data and to use that information to make better decisions about their health care, no matter where they are receiving it. It will also allow health care professionals to deliver higher quality and coordinated care and make more informed patient decisions.”
